Former Premier League referee Mark Halsey has stated that Arsenal's Kai Havertz should have been shown a red card for his reckless challenge on Burnley's Lesley Ugochukwu during Monday night's 1-0 victory at the Emirates Stadium. The Germany international scored the winning goal from a Bukayo Saka corner, but his second-half lunge on the Burnley midfielder sparked controversy.
Referee Paul Tierney issued only a yellow card for the challenge, and the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) did not recommend an on-field review, leaving many fans and pundits questioning the decision. Halsey, writing for The Sun, analysed the incident under Law 12 of the game's rules, which covers fouls and misconduct.
"A careless challenge is a free-kick, nothing else. A reckless challenge is a free-kick and a yellow card. And a challenge that endangers the player's safety with excessive force is a red card," Halsey explained. "Paul Tierney has recognised this challenge by Havertz on the Burnley player as reckless and issued a yellow card. But when you look at the challenge, it's a poor challenge. He lunges in, he catches the Burnley player down the back of his calf, high up. A challenge with one or two feet from the front, from the side or from the back that endangers the player's safety must be sanctioned as a red card."
Halsey expressed surprise that VAR did not advise Tierney to review the decision, highlighting inconsistency in similar incidents throughout the season. "I was very surprised that VAR did not recommend for Paul Tierney to go and look at the challenge again because for me, it met the criteria in Law 12 misconduct. And we've seen on many occasions this season where players have been sent off for those sort of challenges," he said.
The former referee called for improved consistency from officials regarding challenges, handballs, and penalty incidents. "Something needs to happen regarding the consistency of the officials with challenges, handballs and penalty incidents in the area. Hopefully they can go away in the summer and work on this," he added.
Arsenal's narrow win moved them closer to their first Premier League title in 22 years, but the debate over Havertz's challenge continues to dominate post-match discussion.
