The inaugural Enhanced Games, a highly controversial multi-sport competition that permits the use of performance-enhancing drugs, is set to take place in Las Vegas, with the first event scheduled to begin on Sunday, 24 May.
What Are the Enhanced Games?
Founded by Dr Aron D'Souza, the event allows most performance-enhancing substances, provided they are legally prescribed by a doctor in the United States. Athletes are required to disclose their usage. The Games feature three main sports: swimming, athletics, and weightlifting.
Financial Incentives and Participants
Significant financial rewards are on offer, including $250,000 for event winners and a $1 million bonus for breaking official world records in the 100-metre sprint or 50-metre freestyle. High-profile athletes such as American sprinter Fred Kerley and British Olympic silver medallist Ben Proud are among approximately 40 competitors who have publicly confirmed their participation.
Controversy and Condemnation
The event has sparked fierce debate and drawn strong condemnation from major sports bodies, including the International Olympic Committee and the World Anti-Doping Agency. They have labelled the Games "dangerous and irresponsible," warning that participating athletes risk bans from mainstream competitions.
