Former England manager Gareth Southgate, actor Stephen Fry and London mayor Sadiq Khan are among those recognised in the New Year Honours list, receiving knighthoods for their contributions to society. More than 1,200 people have been honoured in the King's list, spanning well-known figures and community heroes.
Sir Stephen Fry, 67, was recognised for services to mental health awareness, the environment and charity. He has been president of mental health charity Mind since 2011 and supports Fauna and Flora International. Sir Gareth, 54, is knighted for services to football after leading England to the Euro 2020 and 2024 finals and the 2018 World Cup semi-final. Sir Sadiq, 54, was honoured for political and public service as mayor of London since 2016.
Other notable recipients include children's author Jacqueline Wilson, who becomes a Dame Grand Cross (GBE) for services to literature. Actress Carey Mulligan and TV presenter Alan Titchmarsh become Commanders of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), while actor Eddie Marsan receives an OBE and Myleene Klass an MBE.
Athletes were also recognised after Team GB's success at the 2024 Paris Olympics and Paralympics. Keely Hodgkinson, 22, receives an MBE for her 800m gold, while cyclist Tom Pidcock, 25, becomes an OBE. Other gold-medallists honoured include swimmer Duncan Scott (OBE), sailor Ellie Aldridge (MBE) and rowers Lola Anderson, Hannah Scott, Lauren Henry and Georgie Brayshaw (all MBE).
Victims of the Horizon IT scandal, including Lee Castleton, Jo Hamilton, Christopher Head and Seema Misra, are made OBEs for services to justice. Political figures such as Labour MP Emily Thornberry (dame) and former West Midlands mayor Andy Street (knight) were also recognised for public service.
