The tumultuous long-term relationship between Duck Dynasty's Lisa and Al Robertson is being turned into a Lifetime movie. Al, 61, the eldest son of Robertson family patriarch and matriarch Phil and Kay, has been married to his wife for over four decades. The couple first met in high school and dated intermittently for years before marrying in 1984.
Infidelity and Reconciliation
Fifteen years into their marriage, Lisa was contacted by an old boyfriend and had an extramarital affair. Rather than letting the infidelity destroy their union, the pair reconciled—a chapter of their lives now explored in the film Faith & Forgiveness: A Duck Dynasty Love Story, premiering Friday on Lifetime.
Starring Luke Benward as Al and Haley Ramm as Lisa, the movie follows the couple as they "decide if love is worth fighting for, and what it truly means to forgive," according to an official logline. Speaking to Fox News Digital ahead of the release, Al opened up about his decision to stay married.
Al's Perspective
"I think the reason I was willing to fight for my marriage was that I had made a lot of mistakes on my own," he explained, admitting he had also been unfaithful in the early years. "When I first met Lisa, she was actually a good girl, who had experienced some hard things in her life up until that point, but really was looking for what she called her 'knight in shining armor,' someone to take her hand and lead her out of some things. And I just wasn't that guy in the early years."
Al added that Lisa's sincere remorse ultimately changed his heart. "It was obvious to me from talking to friends who were with her that she wanted this marriage to stay together," he said. "She was very sorry for what had happened. She had finally come to a reckoning in her own life. She was dealing with a lot of her past through counseling, through people who were helping her life."
Lisa's Story
Lisa disclosed to the outlet that she was molested at an early age. "I believe that at age 7, I began to be dishonest with who I was and what I was. I think the evil one played a huge part in that because he would constantly remind me," she said. "I believe I started on that trail of dishonesty at that point, and that darkness really began there. As I grew older, it got worse and worse."
The couple, who have two adult daughters, Anna and Alex, and six grandchildren, initially agreed to a temporary split but ultimately came back together to renew their vows in 1999. Faith & Forgiveness: A Duck Dynasty Love Story airs Friday on Lifetime at 8 p.m. ET.
