Dr. Ranj Singh: Coming Out Shattered My 'Perfect Life'

Dr. Ranj Singh, the well-known television doctor and regular on This Morning and Morning Live, has revealed that his life 'fractured and fell apart' after he came out as gay, a decision that led to the breakdown of his seven-year marriage to pharmacist Sulvinder Samra.

Born into a Sikh household, Singh, 46, initially believed he had achieved everything he wanted: a successful career in pediatric emergency medicine, a home, and a traditional Sikh wedding in 2005. However, therapy helped him realize he was not 'the person I thought I should be or thought I was going to be.'

Struggles with Identity

'I had the career I’d always wanted, I always wanted a home of my own,' he told the Big Issue. 'I’d ticked all my boxes. So the big question was, why am I still not 100 percent happy? Why does it still feel like something’s not right? And that’s when therapy brought all of that stuff out.'

Singh described feeling like everything was 'fracturing and then falling apart' before coming out to his wife in 2009. He added: 'I was married and obviously that relationship broke down and then it was dealing with everybody else, friends and family. This perfect life that you’ve imagined and hoped for and dreamt of and worked towards isn’t your perfect life.'

Family Reactions

Fortunately, Singh received support from his brothers, describing their reactions as 'incredible' and 'a beautiful moment.' However, it took another decade before he came out to his parents. 'I was scared of how they might react. I didn’t want to hurt them,' he said. To his relief, his father said, 'We love you, no matter what,' and his mother added, 'You are our son, and nothing will change that. Why didn’t you tell us before? We could have been there for you.' Singh called their unconditional acceptance 'everything I had ever needed.'

In 2018, his ex-wife's father, Jemera Samra, broke his silence, telling MailOnline: 'A lot of years have passed but whenever I see him on television I either turn it off, switch channels or just walk out of the room. He still brings back a lot of painful memories for me. The marriage and why they divorced had a devastating impact on us all.'

Life After Divorce

Singh and Samra married on May 28, 2006, in a traditional Sikh ceremony followed by a Western registry and reception at Colwich Hall Hotel in Nottingham. They divorced in 2011. Singh is now in a relationship with actor James Colebrook, confirming their relationship on Instagram in 2025. He has found his 'chosen family' within the LGBTQ community, describing the feeling as 'akin to my wings finally unfolding and then taking off.'
