Sir David Jason has said he would be open to a revival of Only Fools and Horses, but only if the script is up to scratch. The 86-year-old actor, who played Del Boy, acknowledged that the death of creator John Sullivan in 2011 poses a significant challenge.
Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, Sir David said: “Let’s go for it – providing we have a good script. But the problem is that the man who created it is no longer with us. He wrote every episode and just happened to be a genius.” He added that he doubts any writer could match Sullivan’s talent for character creation.
The BBC sitcom ran from 1981 to 2003, spanning seven series and 16 Christmas specials. It is regularly voted the UK’s greatest sitcom. Since its end, there have been spin-offs and a stage musical, but no new TV episodes.
Sir David also commented on trigger warnings added to repeats, saying he has never received a direct complaint about any of his shows. The actor recently reunited with co-star Tessa Peake-Jones for a documentary, where he reflected on the cast being “so young and so successful”.
