David Burke, the actor best known for playing Dr John Watson in ITV's The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes opposite Jeremy Brett, has died at the age of 91. Burke portrayed the retired army doctor from 1984 to 1985, bringing a lively and intelligent take on the character, departing from the bumbling image of previous adaptations.
Burke's Watson was a key element of Granada Television's acclaimed series, which aimed to recreate the dark, dramatic tone of Arthur Conan Doyle's original stories. Despite his success, Burke left after two series, feeling he had exhausted the role. He recommended Edward Hardwicke as his replacement, who continued the part in subsequent adaptations.
Born in Liverpool to Irish parents, Burke studied English at Oxford before training at RADA. His theatre career included notable roles with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre, where he performed in productions such as King Lear (1997) and Copenhagen (1998). He is survived by his wife, actress Anna Calder-Marshall, and their son Tom, also an actor.
