Married At First Sight Australia groom Danny Hewitt has issued a heartfelt apology to his ex-wife Bec Zacharia after previously unseen footage of him making derogatory comments about her emerged. The 34-year-old British real estate agent took to Instagram to express his shame and regret, saying he was 'so ashamed of himself' and apologised 'from the bottom of his heart'.
The controversial clip, shown on spin-off series MAFS: After The Dinner Party, captured Hewitt ranting about Bec's appearance and slamming producers for not 'bringing him better women'. He was also heard calling cast mate Stephanie Marshall a derogatory term. The footage left Bec in tears and sparked backlash from viewers.
In his Instagram video, Hewitt acknowledged his 'horrendous' comments and apologised to both Bec and Stephanie. He admitted to having a 'dry sense of humour' but stressed he was not making excuses. 'I'm here to own up to my mistakes and just apologise,' he said.
Hewitt also expressed regret for letting down the production team and other participants. He said he deserved the criticism and invited viewers to 'throw some tomatoes' at him if they saw him in the street. 'I'll take it on the chin,' he added.
In a separate interview, Hewitt revealed his family were 'disgusted' by his behaviour. 'My mum is so disappointed in me because she's like, "that's not how I raised you",' he confessed.
