Urgent product recall warnings have been issued for two Crayola-branded craft kits sold by major UK retailers including Asda and Sainsbury's. The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has warned that the sand included in the kits may be contaminated with asbestos, a banned substance that poses a health risk even at low levels of exposure.
The affected products are Hunter Price’s Crayola-Branded Touchy Feely Craft Box (model 35052, barcode 5061047350522) and Hunter Price’s Crayola-Branded Discovery Craft Box (model 35501, barcode 5061047355015). The OPSS stated that the products do not meet the requirements of the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011.
Retailers that sold the Touchy Feely Craft Box include Asda, Bargainmax, CJS Trade Limited, Cloud Nine Boutique Ltd, Geeantee Wholesale, Sainsbury’s, Scottish Midland Cooperative, and The Works. The Discovery Craft Box was sold by Asda, BargainMax, CJS Trade Limited, Sainsbury’s, Scottish Midland Co-Operative, The Works, and Vape-Superstore Limited.
The OPSS advises consumers to stop using the products immediately and keep them away from children. For disposal, if the sand is still sealed, it should be placed in a heavy-duty plastic bag, double-taped, labelled, and stored securely. If the sand has been used, clean the area with wet cloths to avoid dust, wearing gloves and a mask. Double-bag the sand, gloves, mask, and cloths, and dispose of them in general household waste or return to the retailer for a full refund.
Sainsbury’s has asked customers to stop using the product and dispose of it in household waste before visiting a store with proof of purchase for a refund.
