An article published on 5 January, titled “Police under fire for handling of Moat manhunt”, contained inaccuracies regarding the treatment of the late PC David Rathband by Northumbria Police. The article stated that PC Rathband waited nine months for counselling promised by the force. However, Northumbria Police has asked us to clarify that it maintains the delay was largely due to PC Rathband himself.
The article also alleged that PC Rathband, who was blinded by Raoul Moat in 2010, had to purchase his own walking cane. Northumbria Police has stated that it did in fact purchase canes for him.
We are happy to set the record straight and apologise for any misunderstanding caused.
