Coronation Street actor Junade Khan is joining the ITV soap as Alya Nazir's cousin Idris, but trouble is brewing when he makes his arrival on the Cobbles.
A Familiar Face Returns
Junade Khan has revealed that this is not his first time on the famous street. In 2008, he appeared briefly as a love interest for Rosie Webster, playing a character named Saj. He recalls being in the Rovers with Sally, Gail, and Carla. Now, returning to the set feels surreal but right.
Getting the Part
Khan auditioned for the role of Idris through a self-tape and screen tests with Sair Khan (Alya) and Jane Danson (Leanne). When his agent called with the news, Khan was overjoyed, especially since he had been driving buses for eight years while doing small acting jobs. He even had a Coronation Street magnet on his fridge for years, a reminder of a failed audition for Imran. Now, he calls it a full-circle moment.
Family Reactions
Khan's family is thrilled. His mother and mother-in-law are avid viewers, and his children have already appeared in films, including one with Angelina Jolie. Now, he joins them on screen.
Idris's Character and Arrival
Idris is described as multi-layered and ambitious. He overcame hardship and neglect as a child, becoming a lone wolf and the black sheep of the family. He is addicted to success but has a vulnerable side, a first for Khan to portray.
Chemistry with Leanne
Idris and Leanne recognise each other from a family wedding. He is drawn to her 'realness' and strength, reminiscent of his mother. Khan praises working with Jane Danson, who even came in on her day off to meet him.
Clashes with Residents
Idris immediately butts heads with Adam Barlow, a solicitor, due to Idris's questionable property dealings. Khan describes Idris as 'Marmite'—loved or hated, with flashes of darkness but not a full villain.
Life on Set
Khan enjoys the friendly atmosphere on Coronation Street, which gives him confidence to take risks. He is excited for viewers to see Idris's journey as he connects with neighbours and makes enemies.
