Stephen Colbert has lampooned Donald Trump over newly released emails linking the former US president to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. On The Late Show, the comedian joked that the revelations were predictable, given Trump and Epstein’s close relationship.
Colbert referenced the government shutdown coming to an end and the swearing-in of Democrat Adelita Grijalva, who could force a vote to release Epstein files. He joked that on her first day she was told “down there is the room where you’re going to topple the pervert cabal”.
New emails suggest Trump was aware of Epstein’s conduct. Colbert deadpanned: “What a shocking, shocking revelation.” He added that it was inevitable: “They were best pals and underage girls was Epstein’s whole thing.” One email showed Epstein offering to help Trump draft a response about their friendship, which Colbert compared to a “perverted Clippy”.
Seth Meyers also commented on the Epstein emails, saying reporters claimed they “raise new questions”. Meyers retorted: “They raise new questions? To me it sounds like they answer old questions.”
Both hosts also mocked Trump’s White House renovations. Meyers described the decor as “the kind you see in a restaurant where they have a fish tank in the waiting area”. He also noted Trump was focused on interior design while the government was shut down.
