Chris Kamara Opens Up About Apraxia: 'I'm Not the Same Person'
Chris Kamara: 'I'm Not the Same Person' After Apraxia Diagnosis

Former footballer and television personality Chris Kamara has provided a heartfelt update on his health, revealing that he is not the same person he once was following his diagnosis with apraxia of speech. The 68-year-old appeared on ITV's Good Morning Britain on Wednesday, May 27, to discuss his new World Cup anthem and his ongoing journey with the condition.

Understanding Apraxia of Speech

Kamara was diagnosed with apraxia of speech in 2022, a neurological disorder that impairs the brain's ability to coordinate the muscle movements necessary for speech. During the interview with hosts Ranvir Singh and Tom Swarbrick, he explained: "The message from the brain to the mouth is interrupted. So, sometimes you can't speak, or you speak slower." Despite the challenges, Kamara remains upbeat, stating: "I'm not the same person as I was, but I accept the new me now, and everybody else seems to accept it, so you get on with life."

Raising Awareness and Inspiring Others

Since his diagnosis, Kamara has been vocal about his condition, aiming to raise awareness and support others facing similar struggles. His positive attitude and resilience have earned him admiration from fans and colleagues alike. Singh praised his "energy, personality, and verve for life," while Swarbrick simply called him a "legend."

New World Cup Song and Excitement for the Tournament

Kamara also shared his enthusiasm for the upcoming World Cup, promoting a remix of the song "Sing 4 England," originally released for Euro 2012. The new version features the Bantam of the Opera choir and Kamara on lead vocals. "I love football full stop," he said. "To think [England] could win this. We're one of the favourites, aren't we? So, it has to happen sometime in my life." He also expressed support for Scotland, noting their exciting style of play.

Upcoming Tour and Final Show

Earlier this year, Kamara embarked on a nationwide tour with his friend and former Ninja Warrior co-host Ben Shephard. Their live stage event, Ben & Kammy's Unbelievable Show, combines behind-the-scenes stories, career retrospectives, and heartfelt reflections on their friendship. The final stop will take place in Manchester on June 14, with tickets still available.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV1 and ITVX at 6am.
