Child abuser faked disability, jailed after CCTV caught him

A child abuser who pretended to be severely disabled to evade justice has been jailed after his own CCTV cameras exposed his deception. John Siddell, 41, claimed he could not walk, open his eyes, or speak during psychiatric assessments, attending interviews in a wheelchair with his head lolling. However, footage showed him strolling into a pub, posing with pints of Guinness, and using his wheelchair as a trolley to move furniture.

Brothers colluded to mislead authorities

John colluded with his brother James, 44, to mislead police, courts, prison staff, and medical professionals for four years. James falsely claimed John was disabled, mute, and incontinent. But police uncovered video footage and selfies proving both were lying. A report found John was 'mute by malice' rather than unable to talk. One medic described him as 'the most verbal non-verbal person I have ever seen'.

Sentencing at Leicester Crown Court

On Tuesday, John Siddell was jailed for 15 years with an extended licence of two years after admitting 15 counts of sexual abuse of children under 13, including one aged just four, between 2018 and 2021 in Leicestershire. He also admitted perverting the course of justice. Judge Keith Raynor branded him 'dangerous' and imposed a 20-year sexual harm prevention order. James Siddell was jailed for two years and nine months for perverting the course of justice.

The judge said both brothers had 'entirely corrupted and undermined the criminal justice process' and wasted NHS resources. He noted that John once appeared 'so disabled he had to crawl up stairs' at a custody suite, only to be seen minutes later walking freely. Another piece of evidence showed John being arrested in a 'catatonic state' but pulling his shirt down to avoid exposing his belly.

Victims' suffering prolonged

The victims, who cannot be named, were profoundly affected. One asked his mother 'what is sexual abuse?' before confiding. Another spends 22 hours a day in his bedroom and has had no romantic relationships. A family member said the delay was 'entirely because of the lies and deceit of John and James which had prolonged the suffering of everyone involved'.

Nicola Potts of the Crown Prosecution Service said: 'While much of the attention will be the lies and antics of the Siddell brothers, at the heart of this are three victims of sexual abuse who had their childhood snatched from them by John Siddell's cruel manipulation. His cynical lies and the support he received from James was a further insult to these victims.'
