Cherie Blair Speaks Out in Defence of Peter Mandelson
Cherie Blair, the wife of former Prime Minister Tony Blair, has issued a public defence of Peter Mandelson, the disgraced Labour peer embroiled in the Jeffrey Epstein scandal. In a recent interview, she emphasised that Mandelson remains a human being deserving of a fair trial, expressing sadness over how his life has unravelled due to the controversy.
"Still Human" and Entitled to Justice
Speaking on Times Radio, Lady Blair addressed Mandelson's critics directly, stating, "I feel very sad that it's come to this. I think ... when anyone's life falls apart, we should remember that there's still a human being. And also, of course, we should also remember that they're entitled to a fair trial." She highlighted concerns about media and social media coverage, noting that people often forget the individuals involved have feelings and can be hurt.
Mandelson, a key architect of New Labour alongside Tony Blair, was sacked as US ambassador last year following revelations about his ties to Epstein. Documents indicate he arranged a meeting between Sir Tony Blair and the paedophile financier during Blair's premiership.
Blair's Involvement and Personal Connections
When questioned about her husband's potential involvement, Cherie Blair downplayed the idea, saying, "I don't really think Tony has been drawn into this. The prime minister meets millions of people all the time, and actually, I think it was Bill Clinton who asked him to meet Epstein." She also mentioned her own name appeared in Epstein files because she attended a women's event where his girlfriend was present, suggesting Epstein used such connections to boast about his influence.
Legal Troubles and Ongoing Investigations
Lord Mandelson was arrested on February 23 on suspicion of misconduct in public office, accused of passing sensitive information to Epstein while serving as business secretary under Gordon Brown. He has been bailed and later released from bail conditions, but remains under investigation. Similarly, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the former Duke of York, was arrested on related suspicions after allegations he shared sensitive information with Epstein during his tenure as a UK trade envoy.
Revealing Photographs and Document Releases
A recently emerged photo shows Lord Mandelson, Epstein, and the former prince together in bathrobes, drinking from mugs printed with the US flag. The image, reportedly taken between 1999 and 2000, is the first known picture of the trio together and was released as part of the US Department of Justice's Epstein files. There is no suggestion of wrongdoing in the photo itself.
The files also include images of Mandelson receiving a foot massage and standing in his underwear. Both Mandelson and Andrew have denied any wrongdoing regarding their associations with Epstein. The scandal continues to unfold, with public figures facing scrutiny over their past connections to the financier.
