Channel 5 is set to release a one-off drama centred on the 2007 disappearance of three-year-old Madeleine McCann during a family holiday in Praia da Luz, Portugal. The drama, titled Suspect: Kate McCann, delves into the police investigation, particularly highlighting the 11-hour interrogation of Kate McCann, during which she was formally named a suspect before being later cleared of any involvement.
Emotional Impact on the Actress
Laura Bayston, who portrays Kate McCann, described the filming of the interrogation scene as 'truly horrific' and an 'absolute punch in the guts'. She revealed that the moment when Kate is offered a deal to confess guilt required immense emotional effort to portray accurately.
Broadcaster's Responsibility
Dan Louw, Channel 5's commissioning editor, stated that the McCann family was informed about the film and given the opportunity to contribute, although they were not editorially involved. He emphasised that the broadcaster prioritised its responsibility to all parties involved in the case.
Context and Ongoing Search
The drama is scheduled for release in the month of what would have been Madeleine's 23rd birthday. The search for her continues, with German man Christian Brueckner identified as the main suspect in her disappearance.
