Jamie Carragher has finally rowed back on his infamous criticism of Casemiro, admitting that his remark about the Brazilian midfielder was "too harsh and premature" in retrospect. The former Liverpool defender had famously told Casemiro to "leave the football before the football leaves you" after a difficult period for the Manchester United star, particularly following a 4-0 defeat to Crystal Palace two years ago.
Carragher's Initial Assessment
At the time, Carragher suggested that Casemiro should move to a lower-level league, believing that the player's best days were behind him. The comment sparked significant debate, with many defending Casemiro's contributions to United. Now, as Casemiro prepares to leave Old Trafford at the end of the season, Carragher has acknowledged that his words were overly harsh.
Casemiro's Response
Casemiro recently described Carragher's earlier remarks as "disrespectful," prompting the pundit to reassess his stance. In his column for The Telegraph, Carragher explained that his initial assessment was based on the belief that Casemiro would not return to his peak form, and that it reflected broader concerns about Manchester United's transfer policy for older, high-earning players.
"I made a comment that was too harsh and premature," Carragher wrote. "I believed Casemiro's best days were behind him, but I should have been more respectful. He has been a fantastic player for Manchester United, and I wish him well in his next chapter."
Lessons for Manchester United
Carragher concluded that Manchester United should learn from the Casemiro transfer experience and be wary of signing players of similar age and status in the future. "The club needs to focus on building a younger, more sustainable squad," he added. "Casemiro was a great player, but the transfer policy for older stars needs to be carefully considered."
