Ten employees of the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) face termination after an alleged retirement party that involved a hired stripper and alcohol during work hours. Two others have been suspended pending investigation.
The party, held at the department’s Monterey facility on 10 July, was reportedly interrupted by a supervisor who witnessed the event firsthand. According to an anonymous employee email, participants were "on the clock and being paid with taxpayer dollars" and were seen throwing money at the stripper. Some supervisors allegedly consumed alcohol and then drove away in state-issued vehicles, a possible criminal offence.
Caltrans confirmed the party took place and has launched an investigation. A spokesperson said: "The behaviour described has absolutely no place in our department and stands in direct opposition to our values and ethical standards." Twelve employees have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the cases.
