California Assemblyman's Divorce Exposes Substance Abuse and Gaming Addiction
California Assemblyman Joaquin Arambula is facing intense public scrutiny after his wife filed for divorce and revealed detailed allegations about his struggles with substance abuse and gaming addiction. The revelations come as Arambula campaigns for a seat on the Fresno City Council, creating a challenging political environment for the Democratic politician.
Divorce Filing Details Troubling Patterns
According to court documents obtained by multiple media outlets, Elizabeth Arambula filed for divorce in January after the couple separated on December 30. In her custody petition, she described years of covering up her husband's issues with alcohol, marijuana, and excessive gaming.
'For years, I have covered for Respondent's struggles with alcohol, marijuana and gaming, concealing them from our children, family, friends and his professional circle,' Elizabeth wrote in her court filing, as reported by ABC 30.
She further claimed that she frequently drove her husband to work when he was under the influence, with government vehicles sometimes transporting him home. Elizabeth painted a picture of daily patterns where Arambula spent significant time using THC pens, drinking whiskey, playing iPad games, and attending scattered meetings.
Rehabilitation Admission and Political Ambitions
The divorce filing included a photograph of a $30,000 check made out to Reflections Rehabilitation. Arambula subsequently acknowledged voluntarily entering the 30-day program on January 7 and completing it successfully on February 6.
In a signed declaration dated February 13, Arambula stated: 'I just felt I needed some help to adjust and to make sure that I did not become dependent on alcohol or marijuana.' He emphasized that he entered rehabilitation without intervention and has no criminal or psychiatric history.
Remarkably, Arambula filed paperwork to run for Fresno City Council on March 2, just weeks after completing his rehabilitation program. He described the in-patient treatment as 'extremely beneficial' for developing healthy coping skills.
Contentious Custody and Financial Disputes
The divorce has escalated into a bitter custody battle over the couple's three children, aged 11, 14, and 15. Arambula claims Elizabeth has refused visitation unless certain financial demands are met, while court records show she requested judicial intervention regarding their financial arrangements.
Elizabeth described herself as a stay-at-home mother for the past 15 years and expressed concern that Arambula controlled all their savings, checking accounts, and credit cards.
Arambula responded in a statement: 'I voluntarily entered into and successfully completed a 30-day rehab program because I recognized I had a problem and chose to improve my life and be a better father to our children.'
The assemblyman has offered to undergo drug testing, use an alcohol monitoring device called Soberlink, and attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings to demonstrate his commitment to providing a safe environment for his children.
Previous Legal Controversy Resurfaces
This is not the first time Arambula has faced public controversy. In 2018, he was arrested on misdemeanor child abuse charges after police responded to his then seven-year-old daughter's elementary school.
Authorities accused him of squeezing and striking the girl's face during discipline, allegedly leaving a bruise from his wedding ring on her temple. Arambula admitted to spanking the child but denied hitting her face or knowing how she sustained the bruise. Following a nine-day trial, he was acquitted of all charges.
Political Future and Public Statements
Despite the personal turmoil, Arambula insists he remains fully engaged in his legislative duties representing California's 31st Assembly District. He continues meeting with constituents, attending hearings, and advocating for bills he has authored.
'I have never wavered in my dedication and my commitment to serve the people of the 31st Assembly District,' Arambula stated. 'It has been the honor of my lifetime to be their representative.'
Regarding his city council campaign, he added: 'I am more committed than ever to this community, and trust the voters of this district.'
Legal Representation and Privacy Requests
Elizabeth Arambula's attorney, Zeppy Attashian, told the Fresno Bee that his client is 'deeply disappointed a private family matter required court involvement.'
'After multiple attempts to reach an agreement with Dr Arambula, she was left with no choice but to seek the court's assistance,' Attashian explained. 'At this time, her focus remains on her children and protecting their well-being. She respectfully asks that her family's privacy be honored during what is a very difficult time for them.'
As the legal proceedings continue and Arambula's political campaign progresses, the situation remains fluid with both parties expressing hope for respectful co-parenting arrangements while navigating their very public separation.
