Bruno Fernandes, the Manchester United captain, has hit back at criticism from former captain Roy Keane, labelling Keane's remarks about his assist record as a 'lie'. The Portuguese midfielder responded after Keane accused him of prioritising individual accolades over team performance, specifically referencing an interview where Fernandes allegedly said he chose passes over shots.
Record-Breaking Season
Fernandes recently concluded a stellar Premier League campaign, setting a new league record with 21 assists. His performances earned him the Premier League Player of the Season and FWA Footballer of the Year awards. However, Keane's comments cast a shadow over the achievement, suggesting Fernandes was more focused on personal glory than helping the team.
Fernandes' Response
Speaking after Manchester United's final match, Fernandes firmly denied Keane's version of events. 'What he said is a lie,' Fernandes stated. 'In that interview, I actually said I took shots when I should have passed. He twisted my words.' The midfielder expressed frustration that his statements were misrepresented, adding, 'I accept criticism, but I don't accept lies. I might even call him directly to sort this out.'
Fernandes' comments underscore the tension between the current and former United captains, with Keane known for his no-nonsense punditry. Despite the controversy, Fernandes remains focused on the upcoming season under new permanent manager Michael Carrick, who described the period as 'a whole new start' for the club.
