Residents in Brighton have expressed fears that three women whose bodies were recovered from the sea off Brighton beach may have made a fatal misjudgement. Emergency services were alerted to concerns for a person's welfare at around 5:45 am on Wednesday, leading to the discovery of three bodies in the water near Madeira Drive.
As Sussex Police continues its investigation, locals speculate that the women could have been swept away from the shore after wading out to sea and losing their footing on a steep coastal shelf. The seabed is known to drop away dramatically not far from the beach, and the shingle shelf can make venturing too far out dangerous. Regular warnings are issued to visitors, particularly around the Palace Pier area where the shingle is steepest.
Investigators are believed to be exploring the possibility that the women lost their footing when the shingle suddenly gave way beneath them. In an update, Sussex Police stated that officers believe they have identified all three women and have informed their next of kin. However, formal identification is still pending, and names will not be released until that process is complete.
The investigation into how the women came to be in the water is ongoing, with no evidence suggesting criminality or the involvement of any other party. Chief Superintendent Adam Hays described the incident as an "utterly heartbreaking tragedy" and extended his thoughts to the loved ones of the three young women. He emphasised that the investigation is sensitive and includes multiple hypotheses, urging the public to refrain from speculation while evidence is gathered.
Police and coastguard officials were stationed along the seafront and on the shingle beach on Wednesday, with a lifeboat visible at sea and a helicopter flying overhead. The sea was choppy, with waves crashing against the marina wall in windy conditions. The beach was reopened later that evening, and officers have since left the scene.
Reacting to the deaths, Brighton and Hove City Council leader Bella Sankey expressed shock and deep sadness, offering condolences to the families of the women.
