A bride broke down in tears after discovering the eye-watering cost of her wedding on Channel 5's 'Rich Wedding, Poor Wedding'. Janet, from Salford, and her fiancé Gary were given an unlimited budget as part of the show's experiment, where two couples from opposite financial backgrounds swap wedding budgets.
Janet and Gary, who have been together for 11 years and engaged for two, usually struggle to make ends meet on their low-paid customer service jobs. Their combined disposable income is just £157 a week. But after swapping budgets with millionaire couple Col and Raz, they splashed out on a lavish ceremony, including a £17,000 venue, a £5,000 enchanted forest theme, and a £3,000 wedding dress.
After the wedding, the couples reunited, and Janet was handed an envelope revealing the total cost. Gary gasped as he read out: '£50,118.60,' before joking about the 60 pence. Janet was visibly upset, saying: 'There are so many people in the world that have got nothing... It upsets me actually, to spend that kind of money on one day. It’s extravagant, it’s too much.'
Gary comforted her, saying: 'You work hard all your life and it’s nice to get something back.' Meanwhile, Col and Raz, who are used to a champagne lifestyle, had to plan their wedding on just £3,500. Despite initial struggles, including going over budget on the dress, they managed to pull off their special day with help from family.
The show, which aired on Sunday, May 3, aims to explore how wealth affects wedding planning and the emotional impact of spending.
