The creator of Prime Video's superhero satire The Boys has addressed fan criticism regarding the show's fifth and final season. Showrunner Eric Kripke responded to viewers who complained about the inclusion of so-called "filler episodes" in the comic book adaptation.
Kripke Defends Character Focus
In an interview with TV Guide, Kripke explained that character development is essential for the story's payoff. "None of the things that happen in the last few episodes will matter if you don't flesh out the characters. I'm getting a lot of online dissatisfaction, to put it politely," he said. He added, "What are you expecting? Are you expecting a huge battle scene every episode?"
Kripke stated that at no point did the writing team consider the episodes to be filler. Instead, they prioritised important character details and ensuring that arcs were fully realised. The show features a large ensemble cast of around 14 or 15 characters, and Kripke felt it was his duty to flesh them out and humanise their stories.
Budget and Action Constraints
The showrunner also noted that the budget for The Boys could not accommodate constant fight scenes. He warned that continuous battles would become monotonous and lack significance. Even without action sequences, Kripke said the season is making the "biggest moves" and cautioned that viewers seeking high-octane thrills might be "watching the wrong show."
Fan Reactions
Fans took to Reddit to share their thoughts on Kripke's comments. One user wrote, "Feels weird to talk about fleshing out the characters and humanizing their stories when we've had four seasons to do that. This should be about wrapping up those stories." Another commented, "It's such a baffling take from Kripke. A final season is usually the green light for writers to go all-out with creative liberties, which doesn't even have to involve huge battle scenes."
A third fan expressed frustration: "Normally I defend what people call 'filler' episodes, but after they spent Season 4 just setting up this season, every episode seems less likely to build towards something worthwhile." Another added, "If he had said to withhold judgment until the season concludes, I'd think he had a point. But he just comes off as judgey. Also, don't forget they spent two seasons of Gen V building up as well."
Upcoming Finale and Spin-offs
Season 5 will air its penultimate episode next week, with the series finale following a week later. Although The Boys is ending, fans can look forward to the prequel series Vought Rising on Prime Video in 2027. However, the spin-off Get V was cancelled after two seasons last month, and the animated series The Boys Presents: Diabolical is unlikely to return for another season.
The Boys Season 5 streams on Prime Video on Thursdays.
