A doctor has recounted the harrowing experience of trying to save a three-year-old boy who died from complications of a common stomach bug. The child, who had been otherwise healthy, collapsed at home and was rushed to hospital, where resuscitation efforts failed after more than an hour.
The doctor, a foundation trainee at the time, described the shock of witnessing the rapid decline of a patient with a seemingly minor illness. The boy had been sent home from A&E with a tummy bug days earlier, but his condition worsened suddenly, leading to cardiac arrest.
Despite the best efforts of a senior medical team, the child could not be revived. The doctor recalled the profound sadness in the resuscitation room and the difficulty of turning away from the boy's body after death was declared. The cause of death was later identified as bowel complications arising from the stomach bug.
