Bonnie Tyler's close friends have expressed that they are 'praying for better news' as the singer remains in an induced coma following a cardiac arrest after life-saving surgery in Portugal. The Welsh star, who owns a property on the Algarve, is currently in critical condition at Faro Hospital after undergoing emergency bowel surgery for a perforated intestine.

Liberto Mealha, a long-time friend of Tyler, revealed that the situation remains uncertain. 'I could not see her because she's in intensive care but we are praying for better news. The doctors are positive with the situation, but so far it's not that good,' he told The Mirror. It is understood that Tyler, aged 74, went into cardiac arrest after doctors attempted to bring her out of the precautionary coma last week.
Medical Emergency Details
A spokesperson for the singer confirmed: 'Bonnie has been put into an induced coma by her doctors to aid her recovery. We know that you all wish her well and ask for privacy at this difficult time please. We will issue a further statement when we are able to.' Mealha first met the 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' singer when he opened a nightclub in Albufeira in the 1980s, near her holiday home. He recounted that Tyler began feeling unwell during a concert in London, and despite tests, nothing was detected. She then traveled to the Algarve, where severe abdominal pain led to an emergency transfer to Faro Hospital after her appendix burst.
Timeline of Events
Reports indicate that Tyler had been unwell for about a month and was bedridden for two days at her Algarve home before her husband, Robert Sullivan, took her to a private hospital. She was later transferred to Faro Hospital on April 30. Initially, her condition was described as 'stable' in an intermediate care unit, but it worsened, necessitating a move to intensive care. Sources say she maintained professional activity despite persistent pain for several weeks.
Cardiac Arrest and Recovery
Cardiac arrest, a medical emergency where the heart stops pumping blood, requires immediate CPR and defibrillation. A ruptured appendix is also a severe emergency, causing leakage of fecal matter and bacteria into the abdominal cavity. Mealha noted that Tyler's husband is grateful to the medical staff in Faro, believing that if she had stayed in the UK, she might not have survived. He spends his days at her bedside, leaving only to sleep at home.
