Bonnie Tyler in Coma After Emergency Surgery: Severe Pain Before Operation
Bonnie Tyler in Coma After Emergency Surgery

Bonnie Tyler, the Welsh pop star known for her 1980s hit "Total Eclipse of the Heart," is in a medically induced coma following emergency surgery in Portugal. The 74-year-old singer had been experiencing "severe pain" in the days leading up to the operation, according to a close friend.

Details of the Health Crisis

Tyler's spokesperson confirmed that doctors placed her in an induced coma to aid her recovery after surgery. The procedure was performed at a hospital in Faro, Portugal, where Tyler resides. Her friend Liberto Mealha, a businessman from the Algarve, revealed that the singer first felt unwell during a concert in London in March. Medical tests at the time detected nothing, but after traveling to Portugal, she developed severe abdominal pain. Two days later, she was rushed to a private hospital and then transferred to Faro for emergency surgery due to a burst appendix.

Support from Family

Tyler's husband, Robert Sullivan, whom she married in 1973, has been at her bedside. Mealha stated that Sullivan believes his wife would not have survived if she had remained in the United Kingdom. He expressed gratitude to the medical team in Faro, saying they saved her life.

Uncertain Prognosis

Tyler's condition remains unknown, with her spokesperson requesting privacy and stating that further updates will be provided when possible. The singer, who was awarded an MBE in 2023, was scheduled to begin a 30-date tour later this month, including a homecoming gig in Cardiff in December.

Messages of Hope

Tyler's guitarist, Ed Poole, shared a message on behalf of the band: "I'm aware of the ongoing news about the Bonnie situation and appreciate everyone that's reached out about it. All I can say is that myself and the rest of the band are hoping and praying that she pulls through."

Fans and the music community have expressed their support for Tyler, whose hits also include "Holding Out for a Hero" and "It's a Heartache." The singer's team continues to monitor her progress as she remains under medical care.
