Congresswoman Lauren Boebert has expressed heartbreak over the arrest of her 18-year-old son, Tyler Boebert, who faces 22 charges including four felony counts of criminal possession of ID documents and one count of conspiracy to commit a felony. The charges also include over a dozen misdemeanours related to a series of car break-ins and credit card thefts in Colorado.
Tyler Boebert appeared in court virtually from jail on Wednesday but was later released, with a return date set for April. The Rifle Police Department detailed the charges in a Facebook post, noting that he was identified as a suspect after being spotted in surveillance footage during an investigation into a string of vehicle break-ins.
In a statement provided to The Denver Post by Ms Boebert's re-election campaign, she said her son should be held accountable for his 'poor decisions' like anyone else. 'I love my son Tyler, who has been through some very difficult, public challenges for a young man and the subject of attention that he didn't ask for,' she said. 'It breaks my heart to see my child struggling and, in this situation, especially when he has been provided multiple opportunities to get his life on track.'
The Boebert family has faced recent legal troubles. Lauren Boebert's ex-husband, Jayson Boebert, was arrested in January on assault charges following an altercation with another son. In September, the congresswoman was asked to leave a theatre for causing a disturbance, including vaping, singing, and using phones, for which she later apologised.
