Britain's Got Talent returned to ITV on Saturday night (20 April) with the first golden buzzer of the new series being pressed during the opening episode. Singer Sydnie Christmas, 28, from Kent, impressed the judges with her cover of Tomorrow from the musical Annie, earning the coveted award from Amanda Holden.
Christmas, who now lives in London and works at a gym, told the judges that her dream is to perform in the West End. However, she faced an uphill battle as Simon Cowell admitted he was not a fan of her song choice. Despite this, her powerful and emotional rendition drew a standing ovation from all four judges and rapturous applause from the audience.
Holden praised Christmas for her natural warmth and humour, saying she had brought the 'most heartfelt, beautiful version' of the song she had ever heard. She then pressed the golden buzzer, sending Christmas to her knees. Cowell also acknowledged her performance, saying: 'That reaction we just had in the room is rare… You so deserve what you just got. Your control was amazing. I used to hate that song and now I absolutely love it.'
Viewers took to social media to share their delight. One wrote on X: 'Yes! Well deserved Sydnie! Absolute goosebumps and never heard that song performed better than that.' Another said: 'WE HAVE A GOLDEN BUZZER!!!!!!! Get in, Sydnie!!!!!! That was great.' A third added: 'She’s got a career in the future for sure, a talented and pure person inside and out.'
