The BBC has published the findings of its long-awaited investigation into allegations of misconduct by former Strictly Come Dancing professional Giovanni Pernice. The probe, which lasted six months, examined complaints made by actress Amanda Abbington, who was partnered with Pernice on the show in 2023.
Pernice has been cleared of all allegations of physical aggression, but the BBC upheld complaints that he verbally bullied and harassed Abbington. Of the 16 allegations made against him, six were upheld, including some relating to his use of swear words. The report described his language as “belittling” towards his partner.
The broadcaster has apologised to Abbington, stating: “We have assessed the complaints and we have upheld some, but not all, of the complaints made. We want to apologise to Amanda Abbington and to thank her for coming forward.” The BBC acknowledged that the support measures in place for contestants were “not enough”.
In response, Abbington said the apology “means a great deal” to her and expressed hope that no other celebrity would go through a similar ordeal. She also revealed she had received rape and murder threats following her complaint.
Giovanni Pernice’s spokesperson said he was “pleased” with the outcome, noting that the review found no evidence of threatening or abusive behaviour. Pernice had previously denied all allegations.
