Barney Frank, the former United States congressman who was a leading voice on financial regulation and LGBT rights, has died at the age of 83. The Massachusetts Democrat passed away on Wednesday, according to a statement from his family.
A Pioneering Career in Politics
Frank served in the US House of Representatives from 1981 to 2013, representing Massachusetts' 4th congressional district. He was one of the first openly gay members of Congress, coming out publicly in 1987. Throughout his career, he was a staunch advocate for progressive causes, including consumer protection, housing affordability, and civil rights.
Key Legislative Achievements
Frank is perhaps best known for his role in crafting the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, which was enacted in 2010 in response to the 2008 financial crisis. The law aimed to reduce risks in the financial system and increase transparency. He also chaired the House Financial Services Committee from 2007 to 2011.
LGBT Rights Advocacy
As one of the most prominent openly gay politicians in the United States, Frank was a vocal supporter of same-sex marriage and anti-discrimination laws. He married his longtime partner, Jim Ready, in 2012, becoming one of the first members of Congress to enter a same-sex marriage.
