Barbara Knox, one of the longest-serving cast members of Coronation Street, has revealed a behind-the-scenes fallout with her male co-stars over a filming trip to Majorca. The actress, who has played Rita Tanner since the 1960s, shared the anecdote during a special episode marking the soap's 60th anniversary.
Knox explained that when the female cast were chosen to film in Majorca in the 1970s, the male actors were left furious at being excluded. 'The men in the cast, the silly beggars, they wouldn't speak to us,' she recalled. 'So off we went to Majorca and everyone thought they're having a great time - but it was dreadful.'
Off-screen, Knox has experienced two divorces. She married Denis Mullaney in 1956, with whom she had three children, before divorcing in 1977. She wed John Knox the same year, but that marriage ended in 1994. Despite personal heartbreak, her career flourished, including a stint on the sketch show Funny You Should Say That with Ken Dodd.
Knox remains devoted to the soap, saying she 'fell in love' with it from her first scene. She also counts former co-star Michelle Keegan as a close friend, with Keegan praising their scenes together.
