Steven Barker, the stepfather of Baby P, has been referred to the Parole Board for a sixth time in a new bid for freedom that could see him released within months. The referral comes just weeks after what would have been Peter Connelly's 20th birthday.
Barker, 48, was jailed in 2009 for causing or allowing the death of 17-month-old Peter in Tottenham, north London, in 2007. He was also handed a life sentence after being convicted of raping a two-year-old. Peter suffered more than 50 injuries, including a broken back and ribs, and his fingernails had been torn out.
His previous parole application was denied two years ago after it was found he continued to deny the rape and any harm to Peter. The Parole Board said he had not taken part in courses to reduce his risk of violent and sexual reoffending. A spokesperson confirmed the referral and said decisions focus on whether a prisoner's risk is manageable in the community.
Meanwhile, Peter's mother, Tracey Connelly, is due to have her own parole hearing later this month as part of her fresh bid for release. She has previously admitted that her 'selfishness' led to her son's death, saying she was blinded by love and wanted 'a Prince Charming.'
