Artist Shares Awkward Curtsey Mishap and Princess Anne's Protocol Break
Artist Shares Awkward Curtsey Mishap with Princess Anne

Portrait artist Louise Pragnell has shared a series of candid encounters with members of the Royal Family, including a moment when Princess Anne abandoned all royal protocol and a mishap that left her feeling embarrassed. The artist, known for her detailed and ambitious portraits, first met the Princess Royal in 2010 when Anne unveiled her painting of the Officers of the Household Cavalry. However, the initial meeting did not go as smoothly as planned.

A Curtsey Gone Wrong

Reflecting on her first royal encounter, Pragnell admitted to a red-faced error. "She was the first royal I met and I got my curtsey all wrong. It was so embarrassing," she told Hello! Magazine. Despite the awkward start, Princess Anne immediately put the artist at ease by breaking formal protocol. "She walked in and waved and said, 'Hello'," Louise recalled. "She's a seriously impressive person."

Enduring Heavy Robes for Art

During their first sitting, Princess Anne had to stand in heavy robes for two hours. When Louise asked if she needed a break, the royal responded, "No, do you need a break Louise?" This moment highlighted Anne's considerate nature. Princess Anne has since sat for Louise on two occasions, including a 2.5-metre portrait commissioned by the Worshipful Company of Saddlers in 2025. The painting depicts the 75-year-old in formal Intelligence Corps Mess Dress, with each colour chosen for its historical significance.

Another Awkward Royal Moment

Louise also recalled an awkward moment involving the Prince and Princess of Wales in 2023. Just before unveiling her portrait of the Irish Guards to the royal couple, she discovered the easel was tipping forward. "We had people lying on the floor with screwdrivers [to fix it with minutes to spare]," she said. Reflecting on her experiences, Louise noted that royals are particularly good at putting people at ease. "They'll want to feel that I'm going to get what I need," she added.

Dame Joanna Lumley's Similar Experience

Dame Joanna Lumley has also spoken about Princess Anne's calming presence. When receiving her damehood in 2022, the actress began to "choke up" during the quiet ceremony. "There was the Princess Royal smiling so sweetly and giving such a grin," she shared. Unable to speak, Lumley whispered, "I can't speak," to which Anne replied, "Never mind, never mind."
