The US House ethics panel has extended its investigation into congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez over allegations that she may have violated congressional rules by accepting impermissible gifts related to the 2021 Met Gala.
A report from the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE), a nonpartisan watchdog, found 'substantial reason to believe that she accepted impermissible gifts' in connection with the event. The probe centres on payments for the dress she rented, which featured the slogan 'Tax The Rich'.
According to the OCE, Ms Ocasio-Cortez was provided with the dress, handbag, shoes, jewellery, hair and makeup services, transportation, and use of a hotel room. Although she has now paid for the rental value of the attire and related goods and services, payment was only made after the OCE contacted her.
The OCE board recommended in June 2022 that the House review the allegations. The House Ethics Committee announced its investigation in December, but did not disclose the subject at that time. Ms Ocasio-Cortez's counsel, David Mitrani, stated that the congresswoman finds the delays unacceptable and has taken steps to prevent recurrence, but maintained that the matter does not amount to a violation of House rules or federal law.
