Andy Burnham Reveals Pitch Invasion Past in Instagram Q&A, Skips Media
Andy Burnham's Instagram Q&A: Pitch Invasion, Policies, No Media

Andy Burnham, the former mayor poised to become the UK's next Prime Minister, revealed he participated in a pitch invasion as a football-mad teenager during a 1984 FA Cup semi-final. In a video released on Instagram, he answered questions from the public rather than traditional media, continuing a policy that has drawn criticism from political opponents.

Pitch Invasion Memory and Personal Favourites

Asked to name his fondest memory, Burnham said: “Gotta be careful about this one, but it is actually running on the pitch at Highbury in 1984 when Everton scored a last-minute winner in the FA Cup semi-final against Southampton.” Photos from the time show police struggling to restore order as fans invaded the pitch at Highbury Stadium, Arsenal’s home ground. Burnham, a lifelong Everton supporter, was 14 years old at the time.

He also disclosed his favourite snack from Greggs is a sausage, cheese, and bean melt. On drinks, he revealed a preference for German lager. His favourite Stone Roses song is Sugar Spun Sister, and his favourite Smiths album is Hatful of Hollow—a compilation album that may be a controversial choice among purists.

Policy Stances and Criticism

Burnham used the Instagram session to outline policy views on water utilities, housing, and education. On the water industry, he said: “We have a situation with water where the shareholders never lose, the bill payers never win.” He promised “the biggest council house-building program this country has seen since the Second World War” with modern homes “that are cheaper to rent and cheaper to run with lower bills.” He also vowed to expand technical education, stating: “I think it’s time to call to an end the era when we have been overly focused on the university route.”

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch accused Burnham of “answering softball questions” and challenged him to “face a proper press conference and submit yourself to scrutiny.” Burnham has declined to take questions from the media since delivering his first major speech after winning the Makerfield by-election.

Previous Reddit Session

The Instagram video followed an “ask me anything” session on Reddit, where Burnham also answered questions from the site’s members. The approach has sparked debate about transparency and accountability as Burnham prepares to assume the highest office in the land.
