The partner of former Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, surgeon Vahid Reza Adib, has had his medical registration suspended by the state's health ombudsman after being charged with rape.
The ombudsman confirmed on Tuesday that Adib is prohibited from practising medicine for the duration of the suspension, effective 2 June 2026. The suspension will remain in place until set aside by the ombudsman or the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal.
Adib, a bariatric surgeon who operated an obesity clinic at the Wesley Hospital in Brisbane, was charged on 1 May with three counts of rape, two counts of deprivation of liberty, and one count of sexual assault. Police allege the offences occurred at a Goodwin Terrace residence on 30 March, involving a woman in her 30s. A crime scene warrant was executed at the property on 30 April.
Adib's lawyers stated he will vigorously defend the charges, noting that he is presumed innocent and is primarily concerned for his family and patients. The surgeon had previously performed over 20,000 operations and had practised in Brisbane since the mid-1990s.
