The InfoWars host reacted with dismay to Trump's comments in the Oval Office, where he described the Epstein furore as a Democratic hoax designed to distract from his administration's successes.
Jones posted a video analysing Trump's remarks, suggesting the president had been 'caught off guard' and underestimated the strength of feeling among his supporters. 'This is just crazy,' Jones said, adding that he was 'gobsmacked' and 'in a conundrum'. He accused the corporate media of baiting Trump into reigniting the issue, creating a 'Streisand effect' that draws more attention to the matter.
The Epstein controversy reignited after the Justice Department and FBI ruled that the deceased sex trafficker left no client list and died by suicide in 2019. Many of Trump's followers suspect foul play and demand the release of all federal files. Trump himself faces no accusations of wrongdoing over his past association with Epstein but is suing The Wall Street Journal over a report about a 'bawdy' doodle he sent to Epstein.
Jones has been among the most extreme critics, previously filming an emotional video accusing Trump officials of a cover-up. He has also responded to Elon Musk's claims that Trump is withholding the files because he is mentioned in them, writing 'God Help Us ALL'. Jones, known for spreading conspiracy theories about 9/11 and the Sandy Hook massacre, was ordered to pay $1.5bn in damages to Sandy Hook families for defamation, forcing him and InfoWars into bankruptcy.
