A 44-year-old man has been charged with the murder of veteran US character actor James Handy, who was stabbed to death outside his Los Angeles home. Handy, 81, was in a relationship with the suspect's mother.
Michael Gledhill was charged after police found Handy with a stab wound to the chest and unconscious on Wednesday. He was taken to hospital but later died. Gledhill did not appear at his arraignment on Friday and no plea was entered. A judge ordered him to undergo psychological evaluations to determine his competency for trial.
Authorities said Gledhill was arrested after telling police he was the person they were looking for. Police had responded to a 911 call in which the caller stated: 'I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin.' Bail was set at $2m.
Handy, born in New York, was a character actor for decades, known for roles in Jumanji (1995) and Top Gun: Maverick (2022). He also appeared in TV crime dramas including NCIS: Los Angeles, The Closer, and Cold Case.
