Gaza Flotilla Activists Allege Sexual Assault and Rape in Israeli Custody

Activists detained after attempting to bring aid to Gaza have reported abuse, including sexual assault and rape, according to organisers. The Israeli prison service denies the claims, and Reuters could not independently verify them. At least 15 cases of sexual assault, including rape, were alleged by the Global Sumud Flotilla organisers on Telegram, who also reported injuries from rubber bullets and broken bones.

Germany confirmed some of its nationals were injured, describing the accusations as “serious”. Italy said prosecutors are investigating possible crimes, including kidnapping and sexual assault. An Italian economist, Luca Poggi, told Reuters he was stripped, thrown to the ground, kicked, and that many were Tasered or sexually assaulted.

Israeli forces arrested 430 people on 50 ships in international waters on Tuesday to halt the flotilla. The prison service stated that all detainees are held lawfully with full regard for their rights. The allegations add pressure on Israel after a video of Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir mocking activists sparked international outrage, with Italy discussing EU sanctions against him.

Sabrina Charik, who organised the return of French activists, said five were hospitalised in Turkey with broken ribs or vertebrae, and some detailed sexual violence. Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares reported 44 Spanish members returning, four treated for injuries. Western governments condemned Ben-Gvir's video, with Italy's foreign minister calling for EU sanctions.
