A forthcoming Channel 5 documentary, 'The Royal Popularity List', is set to unveil the most and least favoured members of the British Royal Family, based on a comprehensive YouGov poll. The survey, which sampled over 2,000 British adults, places Prince William and Catherine, the Prince and Princess of Wales, as the top two favourites, separated by a mere single percentage point.
Top and Bottom Rankings
At the opposite end of the spectrum, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the former Duke of York, finds himself ranked 14th, making him the least popular royal. His ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, occupies the 13th position. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, are positioned 11th and 12th respectively.
Mid-Table and Unexpected Results
Securing third place is Anne, the Princess Royal, known for her no-nonsense approach and extensive charitable work. King Charles III follows in fourth, with Zara Tindall, the daughter of Princess Anne, rounding out the top five. The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, Prince Edward and Sophie, also feature in the upper half of the list.
Declining Support for the Monarchy
The documentary's release comes amid a backdrop of dwindling public support for the monarchy as an institution. According to the poll, only 51 per cent of Britons now believe it is important to maintain the monarchy, a dramatic drop from 86 per cent in 1983. This represents a record low in support for the centuries-old institution.
The documentary promises to delve into the reasons behind these popularity shifts and the broader implications for the Royal Family's future.
