St Kilda have confirmed they will offer a new contract to mature-age recruit Jack Hayes, who suffered a season-ending ACL injury in Friday's win over GWS. The 26-year-old, who only made his AFL debut earlier this year, was forced off in the first quarter after a heavy collision.
Hayes, a former concreter, became a cult hero after kicking three goals on debut against Collingwood. He was thrust into the ruck role against the Giants due to the absence of Paddy Ryder and an early injury to Rowan Marshall.
Coach Brett Ratten said the club would begin contract talks immediately to remove any uncertainty for Hayes during his rehabilitation. 'We'll look after him and talk to him about that,' Ratten said post-game.
Hayes previously revealed he almost missed the call offering him an AFL contract, having hung up on his manager while working on a building site. He has since been nicknamed 'the Ox' by teammates and fans.
The Saints also confirmed Nick Coffield is out for the season with an ACL injury, while Ryder will return from suspension for their next match against Port Adelaide. Jack Billings and Hunter Clark are expected to resume training soon.
