The Socceroos have been dealt a significant blow on the eve of the World Cup, with key midfielder Riley McGree ruled out due to a hamstring injury sustained during Middlesbrough's Championship playoff final defeat. The injury occurred in the match against Hull City on Sunday, forcing coach Tony Popovic to make late adjustments to his squad less than a week before the final roster is due.
McGree's Absence and Its Impact
McGree, who was instrumental in Australia's campaign in Qatar four years ago, provided the assist for Mathew Leckie's winning goal against Denmark. His versatility in Popovic's 3-4-2-1 formation, where he was expected to operate in a hybrid midfielder-winger role, will now be missed. The 27-year-old's injury adds to the disappointment after he was only able to feature in the playoff final due to Southampton's expulsion for cheating, which allowed Middlesbrough to compete.
Popovic's Late Selection Surprise
In a surprising move, striker Mitch Duke, who scored against Tunisia in the previous World Cup, has been cut from the training camp. Replacing him is Tete Yengi, a 25-year-old forward currently playing for Machida Zelvia in Japan's J-League. Yengi, who has never represented the Socceroos, has been in impressive form, helping his club reach the AFC Champions League Elite final and scoring the winning goal in the quarter-final against Al Ittihad. He is one of eight players who arrived at the camp in Florida this week, the final batch before the warm-up match against Mexico on Sunday.
Training Camp Squad and Final Cuts
The current squad numbers 29 players, with only three more cuts expected before the World Cup. The final group includes captain Mat Ryan, defenders Alessandro Circati, Lucas Herrington, Kye Rowles, and Kai Trewin, midfielder Paul Okon-Engstler, and winger Awer Mabil. Among the notable departures are Duke, striker Ante Suto, and midfielder Alex Robertson. Yengi joins a shrinking group of recognised strikers in Florida, including Mohamed Touré, Martin Boyle, and Brandon Borrello.
Yengi's Background
Standing at 197cm, Yengi is a target man who has previously played in England, Finland, and Scotland after starting his professional career at Newcastle Jets. His older brother, Kusini Yengi, was a favourite under former coach Graham Arnold but has since struggled with knee and quad tendon injuries. The younger Yengi will be hoping to make his debut for the Socceroos in the upcoming matches.
The Socceroos' final squad will be announced next week, with the team set to face Mexico in a warm-up fixture before heading to the World Cup.
