How The Independent Compiled Its Top 50 World Cup Players

The Independent has published its list of the 50 greatest players in World Cup history, just two weeks before the 2026 tournament kicks off in North America. With over 3,000 players having participated in the 22 previous editions, selecting a top 50 was a monumental task.

Methodology

The criteria focused on players who starred in tournaments and played a key, historic role in certain or multiple events. Importantly, this was not simply a list of the best players to feature in a World Cup; judges were free to weigh individual quality, historic records, or team success as they saw fit.

Fourteen journalists submitted their top 30 greatest-ever World Cup players. From these submissions, 80 players spanning 96 years of tournament history were listed. A points formula was then applied: 50 points for a number one pick, staggered down to 21 points for tenth place, and then to one point for 30th place. The total points determined the final top 50.

Key Observations

Brazil dominated the list with 13 players, followed by Germany (9), France (6), Italy (5), Argentina (4), and England (4). The 2006 World Cup in Germany contributed the most players (12), while the 1930 and 1950 tournaments had none among the top 50. Tiebreakers for equal points were decided by number of times picked and World Cups won.

The full list includes legends such as Johan Cruyff (11th), Bobby Moore (13th), and Eusebio (18th). Players ranked 51-70 include Angel Di Maria, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Manuel Neuer.
