Andy Burnham's Popularity Plunges to New Low in YouGov Poll Before PM Bid
Burnham's Popularity Plunges to New Low in YouGov Poll

Andy Burnham's popularity has suffered a significant blow just weeks before he could become prime minister, according to a new YouGov poll. The survey, conducted from July 24-25 among 2,075 British adults, reveals that 43% now hold an unfavourable view of the likely next Labour leader—the highest level recorded to date. Only 32% view him positively, giving him a net favourability rating of minus 11.

Net Rating Drops After Brief Recovery

Burnham's net favourability had briefly improved to minus four following his victory in the Makerfield by-election earlier this month. However, the latest figures show a return to the minus 11 rating he held before the by-election. The number of Britons who see him as competent has fallen seven points to 36%, while those viewing him as principled dropped five points to 25%, and trustworthy also fell five points to 22%.

Still Outperforms Starmer on Key Traits

Despite the dip, Burnham still outperforms outgoing Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer on key personal characteristics, according to the poll. A large proportion of respondents answered "don't know" when asked about Burnham, suggesting many Britons are still forming their opinions.

Major Speech Outlines Plans

The polling blow comes on the same day Burnham delivered a major speech setting out his agenda if he becomes prime minister. He pledged to transfer power out of Whitehall as part of a "10-year mission" to raise living standards across the UK. Burnham could officially become prime minister on July 20 if he emerges as the sole candidate to replace Starmer as Labour leader.
