Bruno Fernandes broke the Premier League assist record as Manchester United secured a 3-0 victory over Brighton, condemning the Seagulls to a place in the Conference League. The match marked Michael Carrick's first game as permanent manager, with United dominating from start to finish.
Record-Breaking Performance
Fernandes claimed his 21st assist of the season, surpassing the previous record held by Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry. He set up Patrick Dorgu's opener with a corner before scoring himself early in the second half. Bryan Mbeumo also found the net as United cruised to victory.
The United captain, recently named Premier League Player of the Season, was instrumental throughout. His corner in the 33rd minute was met by Dorgu, who headed home via the underside of the crossbar. Minutes later, Mbeumo tapped in from close range after a slick passing move involving Amad Diallo and Mason Mount.
Brighton's Disappointment
Brighton needed a result to secure Europa League football but were outclassed. They drop to eighth place, behind Sunderland, and must settle for the Conference League. Despite a second-half change introducing Yankuba Minteh, they struggled to create chances.
Fernandes sealed the win three minutes after the restart, finishing low into the corner after a swift counter-attack. VAR initially ruled him offside but overturned the decision. Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen made several saves to prevent further damage, but United were rarely troubled.
Carrick's Strong Start
Michael Carrick, who signed a two-year contract on Friday, has overseen a revival since replacing Ruben Amorim. With 12 wins in 17 league games, United secured third place and Champions League football. Carrick made three changes from the previous win over Nottingham Forest, and his side controlled the game despite the heat.
United fans celebrated the impending departure of Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, but the focus remained on a dominant performance. Brighton's players and fans, however, celebrated at full-time as they secured European football for only the second time in the club's history.
