The 2026 Cooper's Hill Cheese Rolling is set to take place today as people flock from across the globe to watch and take part in the daredevil, and utterly bonkers, British event. Racers are preparing to throw themselves down the terrifyingly steep hill after a wheel of cheese.
What is the Cooper's Hill Cheese Rolling?
Every year, thousands of spectators and daredevil competitors gather at Cooper's Hill near Gloucester to participate in or witness the chaotic chase of a 7lb wheel of Double Gloucester cheese down a steep slope. The quirky tradition is believed to date back over 600 years, with the first written record appearing in 1826, marking this year as the 200th on record. Its origins remain a mystery, though some suggest it began as a pagan festival to celebrate the start of summer. Despite cancellations in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid pandemic, the cheese was still symbolically rolled down the hill to keep the tradition alive.
The Race and Its Risks
Participants hurl themselves down Cooper's Hill, chasing a 7lb wheel of Double Gloucester cheese that can reach speeds of up to 80mph. The 180m hill boasts a staggering 1:2 gradient, making it the steepest slope in Gloucestershire. Most racers end up falling rather than running to the bottom. With loose rocks, stinging nettles, and a terrifyingly steep incline, injuries are common. Broken bones and dislocations are not unusual, and emergency services warn people not to take part. Participants are advised to wear protective clothing if they choose to compete.
How to Participate
Anyone over 18 who feels daring can take part without registering beforehand—simply show up at the top of the hill on the day. There are separate downhill races for men and women, as well as an uphill race for children, ensuring everyone gets a chance to join in this bonkers event. The first race is scheduled for 12pm, with a total of 7 races this year. There is no official organizing body, and participants are warned they take part at their own risk.
Recent Winners
Participants from around the world now flock to the village to compete. Last year, Tom Kopke from Germany won the first men's race, securing back-to-back victories after his 2024 win. Local man Luke Preece took the second men's race. In the women's competition, Ava Sender Logan claimed victory in her debut event.
