A youth basketball game intended for second-grade students descended into shocking violence and chaos, culminating in the arrest of an assistant coach and her father following a physical altercation that left three individuals injured, including a three-year-old child.
Violent Altercation at Holy Child School Gymnasium
The disturbing incident unfolded on February 1st at the Holy Child School located in Rosemont, Pennsylvania. According to official reports, the confrontation erupted in the hallway of the gymnasium immediately after the conclusion of the youth basketball match. Lieutenant Michael Keenan of the Lower Merion Police Department provided details, stating that verbal sparring had occurred on the court during the game before escalating post-game.
Three people sustained injuries during the physical fight, most notably the three-year-old daughter of the opposing team's coach, who was present at the time. The young child, according to NBC reports, was left hysterical and suffered light bruising on her left leg as a result of the melee.
Arrests and Charges Filed
Authorities have confirmed that Brittany Ortiz, aged 38, and her father, William Stanley, were arrested and now face multiple criminal charges in connection with the violent episode. Witness accounts describe both Ortiz and Stanley engaging in an argument with a rival coach and his wife after the game concluded.
The situation rapidly deteriorated when Ortiz allegedly grabbed the hair of the coach's wife and forcefully slammed her to the ground. Officials report that the opposing team's coach then attempted to intervene and defuse the scuffle, only to be assaulted by Stanley, who struck him in the head and attempted to kick him while he was carrying his three-year-old daughter.
Ortiz has been formally charged with assault on a sports official, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, disorderly conduct, and harassment. Her bail was set at $10,000, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for March 5th. Stanley later turned himself in to authorities after officials issued a warrant for his arrest.
School Clarifies Facility Rental Arrangement
Though the violent incident occurred at Holy Child School in Rosemont, a school spokesperson has clarified that the gymnasium was rented by the Malvern Basketball League for the event and that the school itself has no affiliation with either of the teams involved in the altercation.
The official statement read: 'Holy Child School at Rosemont rents facilities to the Malvern Basketball League, whose teams are not affiliated with the school. No Holy Child families were involved in the incident.'
Legal Responses and Police Commentary
Legal representatives for both defendants have begun mounting their defenses. Ortiz's attorney has stated he will 'vigorously defend' his client against the charges. Nathan J. Schadler, representing William Stanley, provided a statement to NBC10 asserting his client's innocence and noting that Stanley sustained injuries including broken bones and head trauma during the altercation.
Schadler further claimed that it was Stanley's family who contacted emergency services, stating: 'My client asserts his innocence, and it was my client's family who called 911 and asked the police to show up in this matter.'
Lieutenant Keenan offered broader commentary on adult behavior at youth sporting events, emphasizing: 'It's incumbent on coaches and adults alike at any children's sporting event to act like the adults in the room, because we are. We're there to foster a safe learning and playing environment for the kids. People get heated, it's understandable. We like to compete. But when your little kids are involved, and you are their stewards, you have to act like it.'
The Daily Mail has reached out to both the Lower Merion Police Department and Nathan J. Schadler for additional comments regarding the ongoing investigation and legal proceedings.
