WWE wrestler Maxxine Dupri, who previously served as a cheerleader for the Los Angeles Rams in the NFL and the Phoenix Suns in the NBA, has publicly disclosed the stringent measures professional sports teams implement to prevent cheerleaders from forming personal relationships with players. The 28-year-old athlete shared these insights during a recent appearance on Logan Paul's 'Impaulsive' podcast, shedding light on the hidden protocols within elite sports organizations.
Media Training and Contractual Restrictions
Dupri explained that cheerleaders undergo rigorous media training designed to avoid sparking rumors about their interactions with team stars. "We had media training on if someone asks you who your favorite player is," she recounted. "They don't want you to say like 'Todd Gurley' because then people are going to be like 'oh she is dating Todd Gurley'." This careful scripting is part of a broader strategy to maintain the professional image of the franchise and protect both cheerleaders and players from speculative gossip.
Strict No-Fraternization Policies
During her tenure with both the Rams and the Suns, Dupri emphasized that cheerleaders were explicitly banned from associating with players. "You can't fraternize with the players for NFL or NBA," she stated, noting that violations could lead to immediate dismissal from the team. She recalled instances where even casual invitations, such as parties hosted by players or their associates, were strictly off-limits under their contracts. "That's against our contract. You can't go to those parties," Dupri affirmed, highlighting the zero-tolerance approach adopted by management.
Differences Between NFL and NBA Enforcement
While the Rams maintained a highly controlled environment—"if someone found out you'd be off the team"—Dupri observed that the Phoenix Suns were somewhat more lenient. "Suns was a little more lax," she noted, though both leagues enforced core rules against player-cheerleader relationships. She contrasted this with the example of Camille Kostek, a former New England Patriots cheerleader who secretly dated tight end Rob Gronkowski during her cheerleading days, illustrating how some individuals navigate these restrictions discreetly.
Career Transition to WWE
After her cheerleading career, Dupri ventured into professional wrestling in 2021, securing a WWE contract following a successful tryout in Las Vegas. Her most recent match occurred in February, where she faced off against Nattie on RAW, and she is scheduled for a rematch this Monday. Reflecting on her sports background, Dupri expressed appreciation for the discipline instilled during her cheerleading years, which she believes prepared her for the demands of WWE.
Overall, Dupri's revelations offer a rare glimpse into the behind-the-scenes regulations governing cheerleaders in major sports leagues, underscoring the balance between professional representation and personal boundaries in high-profile athletic environments.
