West Bromwich Albion have insisted they have not breached the English Football League's financial rules, following reports that the club faces a potential points deduction. The Championship side, currently 20th in the table and just two points above the relegation zone, released a statement on Monday addressing the speculation.
The Daily Telegraph reported that the EFL's Club Financial Reporting Unit had filed a compliance report over an alleged breach of the loss limits for the 2024-25 season under profitability and sustainability rules. Under EFL guidelines, any sanctions would be applied in the season following the breach, meaning a points penalty could affect West Brom in the current campaign.
In their statement, West Brom said: 'The club considers that it has fully complied with the rules. The club will continue to cooperate with the EFL’s Club Financial Reporting Unit and looks forward to resolving this matter.' They added that the team's on-pitch success in the final four games remains the absolute priority.
Championship clubs are required to keep losses under £39m over a three-year assessment period, with certain spending on infrastructure, youth and women's football excluded from the calculation. West Brom, having competed in the Championship last season, had to submit their annual accounts for 2024-25 by 31 December. The EFL's Club Financial Reporting Panel typically publishes decisions on sanctions, but discussions between a club and the EFL remain confidential beforehand.
