Lindsey Vonn's Harrowing Olympic Ordeal: A Brush with Leg Amputation
Lindsey Vonn, the legendary American skier, has made a shocking revelation about the aftermath of her crash at the 2026 Winter Olympics. In a recent Instagram post, the 41-year-old disclosed that she came perilously close to having her leg amputated due to a severe medical complication.
A Devastating Crash and Complex Injuries
During the Olympic downhill event earlier this month, Vonn suffered a catastrophic crash that resulted in a complex tibia fracture in her left leg. She underwent multiple surgeries in Italy before being transported back to the United States for further specialized treatment. However, the physical trauma extended beyond the fracture, leading to a life-threatening condition known as compartment syndrome.
Compartment syndrome occurs when excessive pressure builds up inside a muscle compartment, typically from bleeding or swelling, which can crush tissues and cut off blood flow. Vonn described it in her post, stating, "When you have so much trauma to one area of your body so that there’s too much blood and it gets stuck and it basically crushes everything." Without prompt intervention, this condition can cause permanent damage or necessitate amputation.
The Surgeon Who Saved Her Leg
Vonn credits Dr. Tom Hackett, an orthopedic surgeon affiliated with Team USA, with saving her leg from amputation. She explained that Dr. Hackett performed an emergency procedure to relieve the pressure, saying, "He filleted it open and let it breathe, and he saved me." Remarkably, Dr. Hackett was in Italy only because he was monitoring Vonn after she tore her ACL in the lead-up to the Olympics. Vonn emphasized, "If I hadn’t had done that, Tom wouldn’t have been there [and he] wouldn’t have been able to save my leg."
Recovery and Reflections
After nearly two weeks confined to a hospital bed, Vonn has progressed enough to move to a hotel, marking her first time out of hospital since the crash. She shared, "After almost 2 weeks of laying in a hospital bed almost completely immobile, I’m finally well enough to move to a hotel. It’s not home yet, but it’s a huge step!" In addition to the tibia fracture and compartment syndrome, Vonn also broke her ankle in the incident.
Despite the severe injuries, Vonn expressed no regrets about competing at the Olympics. In another Instagram post, she wrote, "I showed up and did what most thought was impossible at my age with a partial knee replacement. These memories I’ll have forever and I’m grateful for every one of them. Every moment was amazing. Every moment was worth it." Her resilience underscores her dedication to the sport, even in the face of such adversity.
This incident highlights the extreme risks athletes face in high-stakes competitions like the Winter Olympics, while also showcasing the critical role of medical teams in preventing catastrophic outcomes.
